Paranormal Beliefs in the United States
Quantum Pseudoscience Example
Here's my example:
"The mind is like a neutron. In both cases, when the quantum possibility occurs, the physical reality of the quantum interactions becomes apparent. It is only due to the chi that surrounds us all that we can participate in entropy. From this we know that the crucible of creation exists. Amazingly, gravitational attraction is the perfect analog to this phenomenon. This deep connection is the result of bioidentical hormones. It is enthralling that there is a fundamental link between us and vibrational chirality and that consciousness is always found in the quantum duality." Pseudoscience babble contributes no more to the understanding of the universe than our mad-lib contributes to philosophy. It is a hollow attempt to stay relevant in a science-based society. |
Power balance bands are silicon rubber bands that contain a hologram, much like the ones used in credit cards. According to the company, the band "is based on the idea of optimizing the body’s natural energy flow, similar to concepts behind many Eastern philosophies. The hologram in Power Balance is designed to resonate with and respond to the natural energy field of the body." This apparently has the benefit of increasing your strength, flexibility and balance.
What they actually do is waste a bunch of your money and make you look like an idiot.
What on earth is the body's natural energy flow and energy field? These are typical buzzwords used by fraudulent companies to draw in the suckers. Any time a product uses words like "natural", "energy" or "resonate", you need to be very wary. They sound wonderful but nobody who uses them will be able to actually define what they mean.
The bands are popular for a couple of reasons. The presentations that the sales people give are very slick. They utilize an old magic trick (which some chiropractors called 'applied kinesiologists' also use) to create the sensation of being stronger, more flexible and more balanced. This trick is over 100 years old yet still continues to fool people because it is not well known. The following video shows Richard Saunders (Australia's #1 skeptic) demonstrating and then exposing the trick:
